General Investing Information

  Bloomberg offers excellent general coverage of financial news, including world markets.  Covers a broad range of investment options. Microsoft's MoneyCentral offers full-service, broad spectrum coverage of financial services.  Premium features are available through a monthly subscription.
  Briefings is a commercial subscription site for serious investors that contains a wealth of analysis and commentary, and provides commentary for a number of the general sites.  Its free features are worth looking at as well. MoneyWeb looks rather unsophisticated but provides some really good links.  An international financial and business directory, the site has basic keyword search with the ability to limit to any words, all words, and location in the world as well as advanced search capabilities. In addition, users can customize their search page.
  CBS MarketWatch has full-service, broad spectrum coverage with a emphasis on breaking news. The Motley Fool features informative articles, opinion, and message board exchanges relating too specific investments and companies.  The site is aimed at beginning investors, and stresses friendly writing and clear, basic information.  The investing approach is based on the philosophy of it's founders, David and Thomas Gardner, featured in their published investment guides.
  CNN Money is a strong site for news and data: produced in partnership with Money magazine SmartMoney is the Wall Street Journal Magazine of Personal Business online. It covers the major markets, breaking news, special features, and it has many tools for investors.
  FinancialWeb is a global e-financial marketplace useful for searching for stock quotes, market data, research, news, options, and funds by a company's ticker symbol. Users can open a personal account and portfolio for free. The Street offers expert stock advice, coverage of small business issues, information on personal finance, news, and market strategies.
 

Google Finance offers market overviews and business headlines at a glance, and their search box can be used to find more news and data about a specific company, person, industry, or subject

 

TradingDay is an investment search engine that allows users to search for financial and investment information of companies by their ticker symbol. The site also contains a directory for stock research, stock quotes and charts, mutual funds, economic information, market information, investment strategies, and investment guides. There are also links to news articles about the stock market.
  Hoover's contains one of the most extensive web guides on business and investing information. As with many business websites, only a portion of this site is browseable for free.  Also offers an IPO central page.

 

The US Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC Filings & Forms (EDGAR).  This official US government web site provides access to full text of reports filed by companies in compliance with SEC regulations.  In addition to full financial data, these reports provide detailed management discussion of operations and their economic context which may not be found in annual reports or press releases.  Several general web sites link to this information directly.
  InvestorGuide is an online investing guide and company directory. Users can search stock quotes, research, financial charts, news, and stock lists by ticker symbol and can set up their own portfolios for free. The site offers a question & answer section that is great for the novice investor. Yahoo! Finance is a thorough, comprehensive web service, with many features and links to other services, as well as access to historical quote information.

 

  Quicken is a full-service personal finance site providing coverage of investments, banking, mortgages, and insurance.  Includes portfolio tracking and stock option software.  Zacks allows you to track a personal portfolio, examine mutual fund information, view model portfolios, earnings information, and much more investment research.

    Morningstar is an authoritative mutual fund ranking company.  It's web site includes quick snapshots of mutual funds, stocks and general investment information.  More information on companies is available in the library's printed subscription service.
 

Stocks  (see also General Investing News above)

  BigCharts provides stock quotes, news and information.  There is a historical quotes section that is really useful if looking at a specific day.  There is also an interactive chart function that allows a user to look at charts covering larger time frames.  InvestorGuide is an online investing guide and company directory. Users can search stock quotes, research, financial charts, news, and stock lists by ticker symbol and can set up their own portfolios for free. The site offers a question & answer section that is great for the novice investor.
  DailyStocks is good for researching stocks and mutual funds. It has market numbers, market commentary, news headlines, a variety of calendars, earnings info, stock screens, IPO/Filings info, and much more. Silicon Investor is an investment search engine that allows users to search for stock quotes and other investment information for a company via its ticker symbol. The site contains news articles about stock markets and links to market tools and research as well as online trading. Users can register for free to set up their own portfolio.
   

Specialized Resources

  CNet News has specialized coverage of trends in the technology sector. Universal Currency Converter is great for import/export, economics, traveling, and school assignment information.  It is based on live currency rates that cover 180 currencies worldwide.  There is also a historical interactive currency table along with many other free features.
     

Databases & Other Resources in the Library
These commercial services provide editorial news content and financial analysis of investment vehicles by specialists.  They can be found at the main library, on the top floor behind the reference desk.  Please ask a librarian if you need help locating them.

  Mergent is an investment service in paper, organized by industry sector, available at the Headquarters Library at the Business Reference Center upstairs in the Reference Department.  Some information available online at:  www.mergent.com InfoTrac's General Business File has news articles from current journals and newspapers about companies, industries, and the economy.  (Available through DISCUS Research Databases in all Spartanburg County Public Libraries or from home with a valid SCPL library card.)
  Morningstar Library Edition is now available at all SCPL library locations.  It offers in-depth stock and mutual fund analysis and reports, and an online portfolio builder to keep track of your investments.  They include a very useful "Help & Education" section which contains a glossary, an investing classroom, and other tools that help teach the beginner about the basics of stocks and mutual investing. Reference USA is an enormous database that lists detailed information on more than 12 million U.S. businesses; 102 million U.S. residents; 683,000 U.S. health care providers; 1 million Canadian businesses; and 11 million Canadian residents.  Search businesses by SIC  number, ticker symbol, number of employees, type of industry, state, city or zip code, and more. (Available in all Spartanburg County Public Libraries or from home with a valid SCPL library card.)
  The Thomas Register is a comprehensive resource for finding companies and products manufactured in North America.  Search by company or brand name, or by product or service.  Some info available online at : www.thomasnet.com Standard and Poor's NetAdvantage Online Stock Reports has current stock reports, information on mutual funds and bonds, Company information, Industry Trends and The Outlook (the weekly newsletter S&P publishes).  It is available online only at the Headquarters Library.  Ask at the Business Reference Center upstairs in the Reference Department if you have any questions.
  Value Line's investment service in paper available at the Headquarters Library at the Business Reference Center upstairs in the Reference Department.  Some information available online at :  www.valueline.com  
   

Other Resources

  The library carries hundreds of finance and investing books, and several investing magazines available to be checked out.  In the headquarters branch the finance and investing books and the Business Reference Center are on the top floor, and the magazines are on the main floor.
