Getting Started

  About.com's One Stop Beginner's Genealogy covers how to get started, 50 free sources of information, avoiding common mistakes, a country and regional index, and much more. Cyndi's List-Beginners has beginner's guides, hints and tips, software and supply suggestions, and advice on how to research everything from birth, death, and marriage records, to land and military records and more.
  Genealogy Spot for Kids:  offers projects and sample lessons for school projects, as well as linking to kid-friendly genealogy sites. RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees is a guide for beginning your search.  It offers lots of advice and helpful inks to god sources, as well as downloadable charts and forms to help you keep everything organized.
   

General Genealogy

  Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet Cyndi's has over 240,000 links and is well organized and easy to use. Census-online links links to sites of census indexes and census transcriptions for the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
  FamilySearch is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' genealogy site. There is a wealth of information here about how to get started and where to find records. You can also search their family history library online. Ellis Island has passenger records and ship manifests from 1892 to 1924 that include the city of origin, age of passenger upon arrival, a photo of and information about the ship, and reproductions of the hand-written manifests.  Also has a "Family Scrapbook" section where you can search and add photos.
  Libweb will help you find state, regional, national, academic, public, school, and special libraries all over the United States and in over 115 other countries.  Browse by area or type of library, or do a keyword search.  It is updated daily. Library of Congress Local History and Genealogy Reading Room has links to online resources, bibliographies and guides, and tips on searching their catalog to find genealogical sources.  Also of interest:  their American Memory page has links to maps, photographs, military newspapers, slave narratives, sheet music, recordings of speeches, music, plays, and much more.
  RootsWeb is a very large genealogy site with excellent surname-based and locality-based mailing lists and message boards.  Find family trees that have been registered with RootsWeb or submit your own, browse their extensive websites arranged by area of the country or world, or by surname, and search dozens of indexes and databases.  National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Genealogy page has a wealth of information about how to best conduct genealogy research at NARA and elsewhere, and they also list independent researchers who can do research at NARA for a fee.  There is a listing of the weekly NARA workshops and classes offered throughout the country, and many suggestions for helpful publications and websites.
  The USGenWeb Project is a volunteer based, commercial free gateway to state and county historical and genealogical websites.  They also host numerous special projects such as the Digital Map Library, the Online Census Images Project, the Church Records Project, and the Tombstone Project. USGenNet's 1895 United States Atlas is a complete, high-resolution US map that can be viewed by state or by county or parish, gives the population of each state in 1895, and includes maps of Indian nations at that time.  They also link to other sites with historical US maps.
  VitalRec.com "the most comprehensive resource for ordering vital records on the internet."   Provides links for finding birth, death, marriage, divorce and adoption records in each state, county, and US territory.  Also links to Canadian, European, and Australian resources.   
   

Regional Genealogy & History

  The Pinckney District Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society This chapter includes the counties of Cherokee, Spartanburg, and Union. Piedmont Historical Society covers the SC upstate with links to church, death, court, marriage, and military records, deeds, several upstate surname sites, extensive SC genealogy websites, a message board, maps, and more.
  SCIway's History & Genealogy Resource Page links to historical landmarks and organizations in every county of the state and to various genealogical societies, museums, libraries and archives, churches and cemeteries, and maps and documents. The Regional Museum of History of Spartanburg County located on East Main Street, downtown Spartanburg.  "The permanent collection includes exhibits on the Pardo Stone, Quilts, Camp Wadsworth, the Revolutionary War, Camp Croft, Dolls, Civil War, Textile Mills and other topics related to Spartanburg County History."
  South Carolina Historical Society website allows you to search their online catalog and to browse several documents and photograph collections online.  There is also a form available to request research services. South Carolina Department of Archives & History website has news and events, highlights of current and past exhibits, a brief history of South Carolina, information about publications, workshops, and seminars, and a genealogy research room.
  SCPL's Local History links  This is the Spartanburg County Public Library's local history links page. South Carolina Military Homepage links to sites about Camp Croft, Camp Wadsworth, and other regional training camps.
  Greenville County Library's Local History & Genealogy page provides a list of their online and in-house resources including a link to genealogy websites and local historical sites.  
     

African American Genealogy  (see also General, Regional, and International Genealogy)

  AfriGeneas is specifically created for African-American research.  Browse by surname, search census and death records, slave manifests, listen to slave narratives, advice on where to begin, and more.  African American Cemeteries Online
  Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Atlanta chapter has news, meeting information, great suggestions for publications, websites, and links to other African-American and Genealogical Organizations.  Christines' Genealogy Website offers research information and news.  The focus is on both African American history and genealogy, with articles and stories about and by African Americans. 
  Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet has extensive links to resources for African-American genealogists, including historic black newspapers, libraries and museums that specialize in African-American history and genealogy, dozens of mailing lists and much, much more.  Also links to African genealogy resources. Free African Americans of VA, NC, SC, MD, and DE this site contains family histories for hundreds of free black families during colonial times.  Also includes lists and photographs of free and slave Indian families.
     

International Genealogy (see also African American and General Genealogy)

  European Genealogy Mine scroll down to find links to hundreds of location specific sites specializing in European family research, from Austria to Ukraine.  Also lists helpful books, magazines, publications, societies, and mailing lists. Familyrecords.gov is a guide to research in the United Kingdom.  "Topics" include immigration, adoption, wills, census, etc.  "Partners" link to the British Library, the National Archives, and many more. The guides will help you get started, and the extensive links point to over 100 useful sites.
  GENUKI--U.K. covers the United Kingdom and Ireland, with a helpful section "Researching from Abroad" which advises North Americans of various online guides, publications, and societies that specialize in UK genealogy.  Also recommends sources for finding researchers who can help for a fee. Hispanic Genealogy Mine has extensive links to sites in the Caribbean, Mexico and Middle America, South America, and Spain as well as Native American genealogy.  Also recommends books, journals, message boards and other helpful resources.  Some sites in Spanish.
  Jewish Genealogy Mine covers worldwide (especially American, Canadian,  European, and Middle Eastern) Jewish resources, with links to societies, museums, libraries, cemeteries, vital records and more.  Also recommends books, journals, message boards and other helpful resources.   
 

Library Resources

  Ancestry Library Edition: one of the most comprehensive online sources of information for conducting genealogical and local history research available. Hundreds of databases, including census records going back to 1790, immigration, military, and death records, UK census records, and much more, (Come in to any SCPL library to use our subscription to Ancestry Library Edition.) Biography and Genealogy Master Index from Gale.  This database is a first stop index tool for learning where to look for biographical material on people from all time periods, geographical locations and fields of endeavor. Biography and Genealogy Master Index indexes any print product that includes biographical information on multiple persons. It also acts as an index to other indexes.  (Come in to the Kennedy Room in the Headquarters library, or one of our other library locations to use our subscription to the Biography and Genealogy Master Index.)
  Custom Newspapers (InfoTrac-Gale) Full-text articles from over 100 U.S. & international newspapers. NEW! World War II Camp Croft Photographs of Joseph Peter Pizzimenti These pictures of Camp Croft were taken by Joseph Peter Pizzimenti who was from Detroit, Michigan.  He was a musician in the jazz and marching bands at Camp Croft from 1941 until early 1945. He had permission to carry a camera on base and used the darkroom on base to do his work. Mr. Pizzimenti went on to Okinawa by the summer of 1945, and spent the last six months of his service in the South Pacific.
